inping vs Zabbix: self-hosted or not

Zabbix is free software with no device limit, with SNMP and IPMI; inping is a hosted service for websites and servers. The comparison shows when each fits.

Last checked on

Zabbix fits if you want to monitor any number of devices with SNMP, IPMI or JMX without licence costs and take on the operation yourself; inping fits if you want to monitor websites and their servers and would rather not set up and maintain a monitoring platform of your own.

What does Zabbix really cost?

The software costs nothing: Zabbix states no licence fees, no device limits and no locked features, under AGPLv3 from version 7.0. You pay for support (Silver €245 a month) or for operation as Zabbix Cloud (from €50 a month).

If you run it yourself, you bear the server, updates and setup. These costs appear on no price list, but they belong in your calculation. With inping, running the platform is included in the plan.

Where is Zabbix functionally stronger?

SNMP, IPMI, JMX, VMware, templates for network devices and web scenarios with several steps: Zabbix covers a far broader range and also monitors log files through the agent. inping offers none of this for network devices.

What is inping made for?

inping delivers ready-made what otherwise takes setup for web applications: vulnerabilities from lock files, text diffs of pages and public status pages. Zabbix names no ready-made feature for these points on the pages we checked.

When is Zabbix the better choice?

  • You monitor networks, hardware or virtual environments over SNMP, IPMI, JMX.
  • You want to run everything on your own infrastructure with no device limit.
  • You have the knowledge and the time to maintain templates and triggers.
  • You need support with contractually agreed response times.

When does inping fit better?

  • You want to start in minutes, without running a database or interface yourself.
  • Vulnerabilities in application packages and changes to pages should stand out automatically.
  • You want status pages for clients with no extra build-out.
  • Your team looks after web projects, not networks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zabbix GDPR-compliant?

A piece of software is not compliant across the board. Self-hosted, you decide on location and access. For Zabbix Cloud, the privacy policy names EU data centres for account data and the region chosen by the customer for content; we did not find a dedicated DPA.

Can I use Zabbix and inping together?

Yes, that works: Zabbix then monitors network and hardware, inping the websites, packages and content. There is no ready-made connection between the two tools; they work separately.
